365 Art 2012 Day Two

I like being awake at silly oclock drinking coffee, smoking rollis and listening to my neighbour break into his own flat. Well at least I think it is my neighbour but I can't be sure because I've never really met him. We've nodded at each other once in three months. I doubt that I'd recognise him if I saw him out on the street.

Come to think about it, a complete stranger could be down there first fumbling with keys then making progressively louder attempts to gain entry. I'd go down there to be greeted with an embarrassed smile and a "Hey Neighbour". Then, because neighbours should be there for one another, I'd possibly assist him in kicking in 'his own' front door.

You know, it is at times like these when good neighbours become good friends.

I'd return to my flat whilst the Scarlet Pimpernel rummages through my neighbours belongings, sets a booby trap, that will destroy the entire apartment in a gaseous explosion the next time anybody farts, and departs with a demonic laugh and a flourish. Neighbours! Who'd have em?

It's gone quiet now. Well, I've turned my music up. I'm listening to Avital Raz the delightful vocal artist, whom I first met at last summers Cloudspotting Festival, currently blogging from LA. A unique voice to be heard and lauded. It was also an excellent festival with a silver lining.

I've just written a poem. Well done me! Well, to be honest, I've just stolen a poem. In part. Parts of a poem by D.H Lawrence having been taken apart and rearranged to make serendipitous acrostic art. I pat myself on the back for my part in this creation of art but…

Is it my art or D.H.Lawrences art? Is it old art or new art? Is it art or theft? Can an art heist be high art? These and other questions will probably not be answered by anyone anytime soon. Suffice to say I do enjoy being awake at silly oclock in the morning dropping apostrophes.

Emily Deyn Oversees Manchester Pride.

In August 2008 I took this previously untitled photograph. A young woman in an upstairs city centre window watching Manchester Gay Pride. A quick snap as I passed by. I've always liked it. I like the clock.

Yesterday morning I gave this photograph, as a random gift, to a man whom I'd never met, Irek Tankpetrol, who had sold me a gorgeous piece of art (Levy Tran) and delivered it to my home.

An hour later, once he'd seen my unexpected personal gift in the envelope with his cash, he sent me a text message;

"hi . thank u for the photo! its really nice. whos this girl? is it Emily Deyn? cheers. tank"

So I googled her name...

And, whaduyakno, it is Emily Deyn! A fashion designer and better looking younger sister of supermodel Agyness Deyn.

You can tell from the tattoos and Tank knows them.

I love it when synchronicity happens.

Black Man Can't Shop

Yesterday I did some food shopping at my local Co-Operative and Tesco’s. I got watched and followed around as usual by security staff and shop floor jobsworths. It IS annoying always being assumed to be a criminal but it does mean that the security guards never notice the innocent looking girl who comes in after me and leaves before me surreptitiously concealing the deluxe meal for two and bottle of red wine that we will later, gleefully and freely, consume for our tea. (Sorry, did I say 'tea'? I meant 'dinner').

I tend to buy the short sell-by-date discounted stuff, the odd BOGOF and the special occasional packet of rizla. I speak incredibly politely to the shop staff whilst speculating on how they perceive my received pronunciation. Not that I really care. "Dinner for two and f*ck that gerrymandering Dame Shirley Porter", that's what I say... to myself.

Anyhoo, as I was saying, yesterday I got followed around both shops. I picked up my discounted stuff and a buy one get one free then I paid for these items. I then checked my change, correct, then checked my reciept. Guess what? Yep! Obvious isn't it? Both shops robbed me!

At Theftco's I was overcharged by 66p on what should have been £4.99 of shopping. A 13% surcharge!

At the Corruptitive I was overcharged by £2.25 on what should have been £2.19 of shopping. A 103% surcharge!!!

I remonstrated with the manager at the Corruptitive and, all credit to him, he made sure that I left his shop financially 'up' on my purchases. Mind you he did look shit-scared of me and he probably couldn't quite get his head around being confronted by a guy who he thinks 'looks like a thief' calling him a thief and proving his employers to be robbers. Personally I quite enjoyed the irony.

Anyhoo, again, just for the record, I did enjoy a truly irresistible meal last night. It was liver with some fava beans washed down by a nice Chianti. (f ff f ff ff for free!)

After 365 days of posting a brand new piece of art every single day plus an additional ten days of posting more previously unseen art, along with some new writing, I finally hit a metaphysical wall with my soft face and bare knuckles and decided to take a break. It had become an addiction and I had ended up doing the equivalent of smoking cigs just because they are there and not because I really wanted one. (Hmmm... I fancy a smoke...do you?)

So after 375 days of art I QUIT!!

And I'll tell you something for nothing (as I usually do) It feels great to stop.

It has been satisfying for me to know that I can complete such a mammoth task but also that I can quit things when they have served their purpose or just simply gone on for too long. Now Then...

I'll add one other resolution to the ones that I posted here on the first of January, (New Resolve. Yeah?), and It's a very simple one. One that I have been considering for a while which has been made much more attractive considering the recent interactions I have had with Muses old and new.

I have considered this resolution so-much-so that I have even designed a T-shirt to enhance and clarify my resolve so that there can be no confusion. Basically, I have decided to give up sex and any of the clumsy interactions that might unceremoniously lead to it. (Not that it often does).

Anyhoo, I do not know how long I will give up sex for, it's just a general rule, but for at least as long as the average self-denier gives up alcohol or weed every new year. Actually, going by my own annual averages it probably should be longer than that. In fact I have a personal goal that I wish to achieve, which will take a while, a good few months, and when I have done that I’ll head back down to the sea for a little fishing, to practice my breast stroke, do some doggy paddling, possibly some diving and then maybe have a bit of a dip.

Nevertheless if any of you women (yes women) wish to break my resolve by proving yourself to be THE great love off my life then you are more than welcome to try. However you’d have to successfully complete the dastardly difficult multiple choice questionnaire (available on request via email) and you also need to get past the T-shirt first which proudly says:

The Stickily Stuck Years

The world didn't end on January 1st 2000 so I figured that I ought to carry out my cunning plan... So, with a craving to write and a fondness for satire, plus a great deal of animosity towards some individuals who had stabbed me in the front (Et tu c*nts?) I co-founded, with the impresario Ed Monk, a formidable student newspaper called The Students' Onion. It was somewhat inspired by Private Eye, The Onion and The Manchester Guardian but it was better than all of them in it’s own modest way.

It did in fact win a Guardian Student Media Award (on the back of it's first three issues) securing us £200 and the pleasure, nay, schadenfreude of knowing that the official SU paper won nowt. They were funded by the University and we had spent less than £200. There was a great party too. I met Alan Rusbridger, editor of the Guardian, for the first time and Dermot O'Leary. OK… I kissed Dermot O'Leary... on the lips, but he's a lot shorter than I thought he was.

On the back of that great underdog success I was awarded a white-middle-class-guilt bursary from the Guardian to study journalism as a post-graduate, even though I didn't have a degree. The benefits of the Macpherson Report one might suggest or was it the quality of my writing? Seriously, honestly… Is it because I is black?

My Story - Part One

The Sticky Black Years

When I was a teenage virgin I wrote a poem for a girl whom I had met and kissed on holiday. I sent it to her and she liked it. I wrote some more poems. She liked those too so I wrote a few more. Our communication blossomed until one day we met again. And that's the story of how I lost my virginity.

In my late teens I became political, radical and a bit too angry for my own good. I never got arrested but my Nikes were tested. I also had Sunday league football as a release... and a girlfriend.

Then, one day, just after the 7pm news on channel4 a wordsmith popped up and opened up a door. A poem by Linton Kwesi Johnson, license fi kill. I put on the subtitles and sat still.

A black man on TV, speaking truth through poetry, awakening minds in three minutes of rhymes that have stayed in my mind a lifetime. I heard a calling.

I went to Preston. It was the obvious next move.

Part Two - The Sticky Green Years

In my first week at university I had two poems published in the student union newspaper. They were both about how the University of Central Lancashire was soooo shite. I read philosophy and politics but I didn't write much of either. Very few essays, no dissertation = no degree. I did win a writing competition in 1998 and was awarded a prize by Pete Kalu. Our paths would cross again.

A stork brought a present for me around about that time and, being a sensitive artist I lost my mind. I grew a beard, studied the Students' Union constitution, previous election results and then I ran for President of the Students' Union.

I won.

By a landside 13 votes.

It was an interesting experiment in student politics, petty office bollocks and utter bollocks. I resigned under a cloud. A green cloud. Just before the millennium. I spent New Years Eve with my kid and devised a cunning plan of serious deviousness to avenge my detractors. Of course I believed that the world would end on January 1st 2000 and I would not really have to strike anyone down with great vengeance and furious anger even though they walk in The Valley of the Shadow of Death.

It is not magic and it is not photoshop. This is my Mum in the bath.

The birdbath in Her garden on a sunny day.

I show you my Mum in the bath for four good reasons.

1) Because my Mum is beautiful. (Whoop!!)

2) Because today my sister read yesterdays blog post to my Mum, New Resolve. Yeah?, and I'm now a bit concerned that unless I tell Her that SHE is now in my blog (and there is no swearing or hair pulling) She may never look at my blog ever again. I want Her to look at my blog. I do it for Her, for my Daughter and for my Muse. (Ok, I do it mostly for Me but.. come on... I wanna be famous for my Arts which, of course, would help all three :-)

3) Because I do not 'photoslop' my photographs. Any images that you see on this blog I have taken directly with my camera, there is no post-production. This is important to me as it stays my integrity as a Pure Photographer. However it is not as important to me as my Mum. Did I tell you that my Mum is Ace? She is Ace. Proper Ace!

4) Because saying, "Here! Have a look at my Mum in the bath" is in some ways perversely, poetically satisfying especially considering the actual innocence of the denouement.

So there she is. For the first time but not the last.

And if it's not Magic and it's not digital manipulation could it be as simple as...

upside down!

Happy New Now!

I resolve to never purposefully die or injure myself this year. I resolve to never repeat myself. I resolve to be nice to small children even if they stink of poo. I resolve to get to know my neighbours better so that I can learn their habitual movements and thus can play really loud music when I know that they are out or, if they are utter wankers, really loud music when I know that they are definitely in. I resolve to write more. I resolve to get every swear word that I enjoy employing in writing recognised by the spell checker on my computer so that it never again underlines another well justified appropriately utilised profanity. I resolve to tell women whom I find attractive that I find them attractive instead of just going around pulling their hair, giggling like a school boy and then masturbating to computer porn. I resolve to enjoy masturbating without pseudo-psycho-catholic guilt. I resolve to always masturbate in private although not necessarily alone. I resolve to be happy. I resolve to trust myself. I resolve to enjoy the NOW. I resolve to not step on the shiny bits. I resolve to believe in myself even when others doubt me. I resolve to believe in myself even when I am doing something quite unbelievable. I resolve to believe in myself even when I‘m tripping off mi fackin tits. I resolve to stop baiting religious types by attempting to undermine their ridiculous, illogical, war-mongering, idiotic religious beliefs… next year. I resolve to cry when I feel tearful. I resolve to be strong when I feel fearful. I resolve to stop when I’ve had a bellyful. I resolve to laugh more and more often even if it is at other people’s misfortune, however, with the knowledge that Karma will ‘beat-me-around-the-face-and-neck-a-bit’ in her own sweet time and, should Karma mash-me-up-bad, laughter is the best medicine. I resolve to make more art and show it. I resolve to be an Artist and know it. I resolve to keep-on-keeping-on being the poet. I resolve to accept every proffered offer of hospitality that isn’t a blatantly obvious attempt to kidnap, imprison and/or rape me. I resolve to pause occasionally to look at the rainbows. I resolve to pause occasionally before saying “fuck it” and diving straight in. I resolve to pause occasionally before coming... I resolve to play some sports, of some kind, at some point, in some place, with someone, most probably a girl. I resolve to tell people to “Fuck Right Off!” when I want those people to “Fuck Right Off!” even if I’m playing sports and I’m talking to the referee. I resolve to be a good sport as long as I’m winning. I resolve to… probably not to… bother to… play sports at all… I think it’s for the best. I resolve to know my limits by finding out my limits and trying to remember what those limits actually are before attempting to push those limits again. I resolve to push my limits. I resolve to never repeat myself... again.

The Munchies

I had fish cakes as a starter

taramasalata for dessert.

It did not seem odd

for I was not off this Earth.

I was floating on high

like a pie in the sky.

I waffled as I ate,

I even licked the plate.

Super T, as a starter,

straight after the food.

A bottle of vodka followed.

It did distort my view.

It all tasted better

rounded off with a joint.

A nice leg of lamb

with which I used to point out

there’s nothing exciting

this side of the room.

The belly laughs started,

and not too soon.

The finale was a fruitcake,

that was me in the end,

and the stomach upheaval

was very much a godsend.

The party was over,

the picnic complete.

I prepared my doggie bag

to venture out onto the street.

A jacket potato

I donned on my back.

From that moment on

I never looked back...

All the things she said

romanticized in verse

a response rehearsed

edited and composed

only to be shown

when fully formed

unlike her honest

spontaneous outburst:

"For pity's sake Mace!

always the poet

in a bubble of self!

get of your arse

real action

is a living mans wealth!"

She's right

yet here I write

and try to refrain

from saying:

“It's only a game

to control the pain

to reach the morning sane

without you hating me

at least

not trying to kill me

again.”

Oh how the drama

melodramatically

lacks a realistic plot

Oh how the poetry

might just as well

be pissed into a broken pot.

Come die with me ... dine
A hippy hot pot of the nouveaux kind served upon a half-deserted table
Let us eat, forget the cupcake dessert or the restorative bedtime Bovril
All from now will be inedible, these Piscean portions of Yin and Yang
may look in their symmetry as fine dining
yet these limp soggy flowers will be the death of us

In the kitchen the women come to gasp and gas
Talking of the death of Sylvia Plath

The yellowed petals of limpid Lilliputian lilianas
lingered in the pools upon the plate
they let fall their moist stamens,
let fall their flower bells that once rung out and sprung up in splendid grace,
wilted in a wind that shed all of their pollen and most of their beauty,
prepared and curled upon a dinner plate to herald us to heaven’s gate

And indeed there will be time
for the customary after dinner smoke
grey green limp wisps waiting to be wafted, whipped by the wind
towards the yellow fogged window panes
There will be time, there will be time
to prepare our bodies to meet the faces of those who will find us
There will be time to consider murder, suicide and the creative urge to destroy
Time for all the quaint ways of our lives to be seen in our vision,
flashed before our eyes without revision
There may be time for a cup of tea, coffee or a brandy
but there will be no time for inhibition, ices or cake

In the kitchen the women come to gasp and gas

And indeed there will be time
to wonder "Do I care?" and. "Do I care?"
but no time to turn back and descend the stair
this rub-a-dub-grub of a diet will make us quiet
no more evenings, mornings, afternoons measured out with crack spoons
this evening we will sleep so peacefully, eternally,
turning our masculine and feminine living energy into a eulogy to our memory
(They will say: how could they commit this sin?)

And how should I presume?
Do I care? And will I make a great cadaver, brown and bare?
(But in the lamplight, downed with light white hair!)
As I lie with this pillow by my head, stretched on the floor,
you here beside me, you elegant with your shawl
our breath scuttling towards dead shores and dead pauses and dead silent seas.
(They will say: He is not Lazarus, he will not come back from this deep)

And would it have been worth it, after all,
After all the marshmallows, the fish pies, the tea
among the Elizabethan porcelain and the hovering kingfishers
among positive and negative talk of you and me
would it have been worthwhile? Or just disappointing?

No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
nor am I a prized promise to Salome
no head on a platter, (not that it should matter but I am neither a Baptist or a Basquiat.)
In fact there is no inhibition to this decision as we fall like autumn leaves.

We have lingered in the chambers of the pubs and clubs
served by bar-girls wreathed with glitter and garlands
We have tasted the food
we have gone at dusk wept and feasted, feasted and prayed that this was not all there is
but it was all there is
until this dish

Let the mermaids catch my fall and my abject disappointment
Let us eat
let us eat and go then, you and I
with the evening spread out against the sky
tonight we dine
this night we die.

This is my first ever art installation piece. Exhibited at The Cornerhouse Gallery, Manchester’s international centre for contemporary visual arts and independent film. My inspiration was Damien Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.

The Zebra was supplied by the playwright Tasja Katz and the work was funded by Kaleidoscopic Artist Efi P and The Cornerhouse.

Please note that the Zebra was already dead before I pickled it.

I saw her beauty

Couldn't take my eyes off it

Stored her NOW in the photographic memory of mind

Yet my man made storage device, my camera, obscured her.

There is a grief

My mind can not keep all

that the eye sees

The machine only stores what it saw.

Am I deceived?

Does my memory cheat the reality?

What, indeed, is beauty?

I don't care

In the here and now

when she was here (and how!)

At the time it looked like magic

to a three year old.

But now

I put a card in the gas meter

it flashes at me

I pictured this

two years ago in an attic flat

in Whalley D'Range

Manchester

The home of... HOME

just enough Elbow room to flow.

She wriggles, fights, embraces, dances, struggles

in her sleep - she's safe, here with me

in my arms but free.

This afternoon we had gone to the lake

I skimmed pebbles

she swam across - climbed the hill adjacent

I thought she was lost - she'd shed tears up there, I believe,

at the utter loss of the past - then it rained

I ran her a bath

We felt the present

The NOW

After dinner

she shaved my head

my dreads had been fed on bad weed

gin & juice

kept secrets & stress

nevertheless

now I rest my baal head in bed

I appreciate these times

that I am not yet dead

that THEN is not NOW!

She stirs - glances at me with a hint of shock

I look back - cat like

stroke her down

along the tip of her nose

until her eyes close

again

A poem, about Belief, inspired by and written during a free poetry workshop with Jean 'Binta' Breeze at the Contact Theatre, Manchester. I'm very pleased, in fact I am rather elated, that for one whole, wholesome day, Miss Breeze was my Muse.

Belief

Belief would look like a mountain

Like a mountain domineering a landscape

Like a dominating mountain protecting an oasis

Like an embracing mountain range harbouring an oasis of life

Like a planet nurturing existence

Like everything that ever was

Like me.

Belief would sound like a heavy hammer striking a solid nail.
Like a heavy carpenters hammer striking a sharp long wide shiny new nail into solid yet yielding wood.
